Trainee Programme leading to the European Qualifying Examination

A solid basis of technical knowledge. A keen interest in seeing ideas realized. A drive to defend these ideas as if they were your own. These constitute solid foundations if you wish to become a patent attorney. If you have a master’s degree in science or engineering (civilingenjör), Ström & Gulliksson can train you in the law required to become one of our top-class patent attorneys.

“Training to become a patent attorney involves developing the ability to see the big picture and the courage to challenge perceptions. Also, you need to be inquisitive and open-minded. Working on the brainchildren of others requires not only substantial legal knowledge in the field of patents, but also vast technical knowledge and an outstanding grasp of language and style. You also need to be a good listener and strongly committed to the client’s commercial success.”
Maria Weineisen, European Patent Attorney and coordinator of Ström & Gulliksson’s Trainee Programme

As a Ström & Gulliksson trainee, you will quickly come in contact with clients and work on real cases with your supervisor at an early stage.

“The trainee programme is just what I expected. I had a steep learning curve thanks to close collaboration with experienced colleagues and my mentor. I was assigned my own tasks and responsibilities immediately. Everyone who works here wants to be part of making a difference and serve the best interests of each individual client. The opportunity to contribute to creating commercial value for a groundbreaking invention is exciting.”
Ida Moen Larsson, European Patent Attorney and former trainee programme participant

Over three terms, the trainee programme spans a variety of modules on everything from basic patent law to challenges in complex patent disputes. As a trainee with us, you also have the opportunity to take the external courses required to pass the European Qualifying Examination.

“When you take our trainee programme, we aim for you to feel you are developing and, simply, that you will be able to come a long way here quickly. We are proud of the success of our candidates. This demonstrates that the introduction and training we set them up for success.”
Rikard Roos, Managing Partner and European Patent Attorney.

Patent attorney – technical expertise and patent law knowledge

Working on the brainchildren of others requires both vast technical knowledge and an active, outgoing personality. To thrive as a patent attorney, you must have a drive and commitment to defend these ideas as if they were your own. Our clients come from a wide range of fields of technology and vary in size, as we represent companies ranging from startups to multinationals. Sometimes the technical content is insignificant while the legal challenges are major, and sometimes vice versa. Our many years of collaboration with Advokatbyrån Gulliksson give our patent consultants easy access to legal resources to offer our clients. Gulliksson’s lawyers are intellectual property law specialists, and we jointly represent clients in national and international patent proceedings. As a patent professional with us, you will work in a team with assistance from our paralegals.

Paralegal – a key part of the team

Ström & Gulliksson’s paralegals are valued employees and an important link to our external contacts. We value the dedication, service-mindedness and outstanding grasp of language and style of our paralegals. A day in the working life of a paralegal is rich in variety, offering a combination of fascinating work with great opportunities for development. You will be entrusted with independently administering and coordinating patent cases in coordination with our patent consultants. This entails communication with both domestic and foreign clients, our international network of patent agencies and patent authorities. You will also be responsible for registering cases, registering and keeping track of deadlines, assigning or transferring patents, invoicing and general administration. Our paralegals are a key part in everything we do, and we frequently work across offices to give our clients the best team composition.
