Sweden has been ranked as the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>EU innovation l<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>ader<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and retains this top position with several independent institutes. Is<\/span><\/span>\u00a0this due to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ground<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>breaking research and ingenious inventions<\/span><\/span>, or is it all down to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>combination of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>traditional manufacturing industry, inventive start-ups and courageous entrepreneurs?<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>

<\/span>One thing is clear \u2013<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Swedish industrial companies<\/span><\/span>\u2019 ability<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>adapt<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>grasp<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the value of developing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>not only\u00a0<\/span><\/span>hardware<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0but also software<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>key<\/span><\/span>\u00a0factor for continu<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0success.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>\u201cThe<\/span><\/span>re is a strong trend to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>patent systems and software.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This is<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a natural and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>necessary development<\/span><\/span>\u00a0given the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>transformation and digitalisation\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>manufacturing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and other companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Now we need n<\/span><\/span>ew<\/span><\/span>\u00a0ways of creating commercial value,<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0says\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Leif J\u00f6rgensson<\/span><\/span><\/a>, Senior Partner and European Patent Attorney at Str\u00f6m & Gulliksson.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>A clear link between innovation and regional competitiveness<\/span><\/span><\/strong>

<\/span>According to the Regional Innovation Scoreboard presented by the European Commission\u00a0<\/span><\/span>recently<\/span><\/span>, the commercially most successful regions are typically found in countries that have been recognised as innovative. The report also\u00a0<\/span><\/span>found<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a clear link between innovation and regional competitiveness.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>\u201cSweden \u2013 not only Stockholm but also Sk\u00e5ne \u2013 has been highly ranked as innovative\u00a0<\/span><\/span>because of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0major investments in research in these regions<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and because the value of patenting achievements is generally<\/span><\/span>\u00a0well<\/span><\/span>\u00a0understood. A\u00a0<\/span><\/span>well-established<\/span><\/span>\u00a0patent portfolio is often key to enticing investors,\u201d says Leif J\u00f6rgensson.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>The European Innovation Scoreboard considers changes in political priorities, economic theory and access to new data\u00a0<\/span><\/span>when<\/span><\/span>\u00a0adjust<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>metrics<\/span><\/span>. Several of the recognised institutes that measure and rank innovativeness weigh in several factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>There<\/span><\/span>\u00a0are several ways of measuring the innovativeness of a country or region<\/span><\/span>, of course<\/span><\/span>. The number of patents\u00a0<\/span><\/span>considering<\/span><\/span>\u00a0population size and statistics on<\/span><\/span>\u00a0research and development<\/span><\/span>\u00a0investments<\/span><\/span>\u00a0give some indication, but they don\u2019t give us the full picture<\/span><\/span>. At the same time, it\u2019s difficult to measure and put a figure on the added value of a region\u2019s investments in innovations,\u201d says Leif J\u00f6rgensson.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>Business Region Sk\u00e5ne<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0is of the opinion that it is the entrepreneurial spirit and the high level of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>education<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 combined with the unique location, close to a market\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of<\/span><\/span>\u00a020 million\u00a0<\/span><\/span>people<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 that make Sk\u00e5ne such an obvious choice for investors.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>Although\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the \u00d6resund region has world-class research and open, cross-industry innovation networks<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we hav<\/span><\/span>e\u00a0<\/span><\/span>historically<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>also had heavy industr<\/span><\/span>ies<\/span><\/span>\u00a0that ha<\/span><\/span>ve<\/span><\/span>\u00a0been forced to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>transform<\/span><\/span>\u00a0from traditional manufacturing to other business models\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in order\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to remain competitive,\u201d comments Leif J\u00f6rgensson, who has seen an increasing number of Str\u00f6m & Gulliksson\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>clients<\/span><\/span>\u00a0come to this realisation<\/span><\/span>\u00a0over the years<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>One of the challenges\u00a0<\/span><\/span>lies in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>getting<\/span><\/span>\u00a0traditional industrial companies focused on manufacturing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0consider long-term value and realise that investments and development also i<\/span><\/span>nclude<\/span><\/span>\u00a0systems and software, not merely physical products.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
